A list of unlikely discoveries (some ongoing):

  • Washing machine time is different from conventional time.
  • Having a paper towel holder built into your cabinets does not make you fancy.
  • Having a cast-iron pan will make men who think they know more about cooking than they do nod approvingly.
  • I am worthy of love and respect.
  • Four quarters is worth more than a dollar.
  • When the bus pulls up, it’s better to stand to the left of the sidewalk, not in front of it. (The bus driver had to tell me that one.)
  • The word drought does not rhyme with wrought. I’ve known this for years, and I still don’t really know it.
  • Time speeds up and slows down.
  • Occasionally, convenience surpasses the beauty of doing something the “right” or “old-fashioned” way. Looking at you, electric kettle, you thing of beauty, you.
  • Radiators (the heating kind) are loud.
  • Sometimes, the questions are more important than the answers.
  • Staying up until 3 am and waking up at 7 am will always feel terrible. Who knew?
  • Telling yourself that you’ll go to sleep at a reasonable hour does not mean you will. At times, it even means you know you won’t.
  • Allowing myself to be embarrassed can be a good thing.
  • Resentment — some of it anyway — is preventable.
  • Completing chores you’ve been putting off for months can feel really good! Again, who knew?
  • Living in the suburbs is a breath of fresh air after living in the city. Sometimes literally.
  • The trees can change color overnight.
  • Things can (and will) get better.

I love these. I can relate to much of what you wrote, and they’re so funny and smart.
It would be very cool to keep an ongoing list during this time in our lives.

I just used Siri to spell a word for me. I had no idea you could do that! I thought of you Ella and my unlikely discovery! Cheers!

Such wisdom from my grand daughter. Also I love how you write…you truly have a voice. G’ma
